Resource Centre for Independent Study

The resource centre gives you the opportunity to individualize your program and experience independent learning. You make your own choices about what you want to learn and progress at your own speed. This is not usually available in other programs.

A variety of ESL materials that are commonly used for international students at many ESL schools are available. There are six categories to choose from reading, writing, listening, speaking including pronunciation, idioms, and vocabulary. Cassettes or CDs are included with some books. The teacher is available to assist you with the materials you have chosen during this daily two-hour individual study time. Private tutoring with the teacher can be of great benefit to a student.

When students study at North American colleges or universities some find difficulty adjusting to the education system. In Canada students are often required to work independently and make their own learning choices. Using the resource centre provides an introduction to this method of learning for those who are unfamiliar with it. It should assist students who plan further study in Canada or the United States and need this experience.

Homework is a required part of the course. Daily assignments include work in all four skill areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Examples of homework are reflective journal writing, individual conversational grammar, reading as preparation for discussion, individual pronunciation analysis, and listening to authentic conversations, interviews, and news reports. In addition to daily homework, you will be given project work to be completed during the session.

At the end of the session you will receive a certificate of recognition and a letter that outlines the course content, the session length, and your accomplishments.
